Is AION 2 pay to win?

The short answer

AION 2 Global is free to play. Money in the Global version mostly buys speed, comfort and access to trading. It does not, in the official shop notices we reviewed, sell top gear directly. However, two paid levers have real gameplay value: the membership (trading and the Kina–Quna exchange) and consumables like Odyle Energy. That puts AION 2 in the “pay for speed” group, not “pay to win outright”.

This is our editorial view as of the October 14, 2026 patch. It may change with new shop items.

PEGI lists paid random items among the game’s descriptors. Expect some chest-style products.

Where paying gives a real edge

1. The Kina–Quna exchange. With membership you can buy Quna with money and exchange it for Kina. Kina buys gear and materials from other players. This is an indirect money-to-power path.
2. Odyle Energy. Membership lets you inject Odyle Energy twice on reward Cubes in Expedition, Transcendence and Sanctuary instead of once. That means more rewards from the same runs.
3. Wind Breeze Merchants. NC sells some progression consumables there. In the October 14 patch NC raised the weekly per-character limit for Odyle Energy (Bound) from 4 to 20 and removed the per-server cap of 16.

Where paying does not help

• Leveling, story, map exploration and mechanics knowledge.
• Skill in PvP and raids. A boss does not care about your wallet if you stand in the wrong place.
• Cosmetics: purely visual.

What happened in Korea and Taiwan?

KR and TW launched in November 2025. Monetization was one of the main complaints there. On its August 11, 2026 earnings call NC said that, before the July Chapter 1 update, it lowered membership prices and rationalized cosmetic purchases in those regions. The Global version launched later with its own price list. Do not assume KR shop items exist in Global. See Global vs KR/TW.

In Global, NC also changed the Founder’s Packs after feedback: their cosmetics now work on all characters and servers.

The RMT trap

Buying Kina or Quna from websites is the fastest way to lose your account. NC warned that it monitors illicit purchases and may terminate access. Between October 11 and 14, 2026 NC announced restrictions on 4,996 + 10,000 + 9,422 accounts for bots, gold farming, unauthorized programs and real-money trading. See account rules and RMT risks.

Verdict

• Casual or solo player: you can play for free. Membership becomes useful once you want to trade.
• Competitive PvE player: membership is close to mandatory for the Market and Odyle Energy efficiency.
• Top PvP / ranking player: heavy spenders gain time through Kina exchange and consumables. Skill and time still matter most.
